This morning (March 6, 2017) U.S. President Trump signed a new scaled-back version of his controversial travel ban targeting citizens from six Muslim-majority countries and shutting down the U.S. refugee program. The revised travel order (AKA the Muslim Ban) still affects visitors from Iran, Syria, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen and Libya.
Make no mistake, this revised travel ban is still a discriminatory action by the Trump administration. The only way to fix this is not to have a ban that targets people based on their race, nationality, birthplace or religion.
While the Canadian government clarified with its U.S. counterparts that Canadian citizens will not be affected by this executive order at the time President Trump signed the initial travel ban, millions of people around the world are still impacted by this revised discriminatory order, including people from the targeted nationalities who live in Canada on student/work visas. As Canadians who believe in values of multiculturalism and diversity we have to strongly stand against this discriminatory policy by the U.S. government.
We call on the Government of Canada to introduce specific policies to help those who will be impacted by Trump’s immigration/travel ban including students from Iran and other 5 targeted nationalities.
