The Iranian Canadian Congress has advocated for the investigation of corrupt officials who escape Iran to Canada for years. When Mahmoud Khavari and Marjan Aleagha were accused of stealing millions of dollars and immigrating to Canada, we asked the Canadian government to intervene and investigate these individuals.

Unfortunately, we have seen these cases multiply in recent months. These include multiple cases -- which you can read about here -- of accused embezzlers who are either in Canada or have investment ties to Canada according to multiple reports and preliminary investigation done by the Iranian Canadian Congress (ICC).

Canada must act immediately to ensure that these individuals cannot use this country to escape justice. That is why the Iranian Canadian Congress has created this easy-to-use tool to email your representatives and the Ministers of Justice, Public Safety, and National Revenue to ask them to investigate the numerous reports of corrupt officials from Iran who have migrated to Canada recently with large sums of embezzled money.

متاسفانه در چند ماه گذشته شاهد افزایش مواردی از این دست بوده ایم. این موارد شامل افرادی همچون علی اشرف ریاحی، جلیل سبحانی و امید اسد بیگی میشود. بر اساس گزارشهای متعدد و تحقیقات اولیه انجام شده توسط کنگره ایرانیان کانادا، این افراد ذکر شده یا در کانادا هستند یا در این کشور سرمایه گذاری و ارتباطات مالی دارند.

کانادا باید به سرعت وارد عمل شود تا اطمینان حاصل کند که این افراد نتوانند از فرار به این کشور به عنوان راهی برای گریختن از چنگال عدالت استفاده کنند. به همین دلیل کنگره ایرانیان کانادا ابزاری ساده برای ارسال ایمیل به نمایندگان و وزرای دادگستری، امنیت عمومی و عواید ملّی ایجاد کرده تا از این طریق از آنها بخواهیم که تحقیقات و پیگیری های قانونی در خصوص این افراد متهم به فساد اقتصادی انجام دهد و با ورود این افراد و پول های حاصل از اختلاس به کانادا مقابله کند.

As your constituent and a resident of Canada, I would like to express my extreme concern about the cases of individuals charged with corruption and embezzlement in Iran who flee to Canada.

Though there have been multiple cases of such individuals living in Canada in the past years, including the cases of Mahmoud Khavari and Marjan Aleagha who embezzled billions from the country, in recent days there have been multiple reports about several other individuals charged in corruption cases in Iran who have fled to Canada and transferred millions of dollars of the money they have made through embezzlement and bribery to this country. These include:

- Ali Ashraf Riahi: Charged in a petrochemical corruption case. 
- Jalil Sobhani: Charged in a corruption and bribery case involving the former deputy of the Iranian judiciary 
- Omid Assadbeigi: Charged in a corruption and bribery case. In a recent letter, the workers of Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Agro-Industrial Complex directly appealed to Canadians to investigate and return millions of dollars in corruption money that he has allegedly transferred to Canada.

The Iranian-Canadian community has raised concerns about these cases on several occasions both during the former government of Prime Minister Harper and during the time of the current Liberal government. However, Iranian-Canadians have never received any response, nor has the government taken any action on this issue. 
While these individuals have been able to move to Canada and invest their money freely, many ordinary Iranian-Canadians have been unfairly singled out in the immigration process and have been subject to banking restrictions because of their nationality and country of origin. Indeed, the community is aware of cases of Iranian international students whose bank accounts were closed with only a few hundred dollars in them.

As such, I ask you to call on the Canadian government and the Minister of Justice, the Minister of Public Safety and the Minister of National Revenue to immediately launch investigations through responsible agencies about the cases of individuals mentioned in this letter using the full power of the Canadian law including but not limited to anti-money laundering laws. 
Our government and law enforcement agencies must prevent Canada from becoming a haven for corrupt money. It is important to emphasize that money laundering in Canada is a significant challenge and it is not limited to the Iranian community. Our government must act now.
