Since the former Prime Minister Stephen Harper broke diplomatic ties with Iran, Iranian-Canadians have been deprived of consular services in Canada and Iran. As the election fast-approaches, it is imperative that you address these concerns in your platform and the issues it has raised for Iranian-Canadians in your constituency.

For nearly a decade, Iranian-Canadians have been forced to seek consular services from offices in third countries, the United States in particular, for passport renewals as well as the issuing of birth and marriage certificates, and visas. This has not only posed incredible challenges for Iranians immigrating to Canada or seeking visas, but also is in direct contradiction with the government’s renewed immigration policy which has advocated for the reunification of families in Canada.

Furthermore, Canadians who travel to Iran to visit their loved ones do not have access to Canadian consular support, which has proven to be difficult time and time again for dual nationals. Besides being a major inconvenience for the Iranian-Canadian community, this has placed immense strain on families living here and abroad.

It is long overdue for Ottawa and Tehran to engage in constructive dialogue and move toward establishing an Iranian consular office in Canada and vice versa — actions which would be widely supported and greatly appreciated by the Iranian-Canadian community.

With the 2021 Federal Election scheduled for September 20th, I am asking that you recognize the importance of this issue and urge the incoming Government to initiate talks with the Iranian government regarding consular services, despite the absence of diplomatic relations. With your help, I hope that we can resolve this long-standing issue for our community in Canada.
